Teachers swing against Tories over 'too hasty' school reforms
Article Abstract:
The Independent surveyed 180 teachers to find their political views. Seventy-five would vote Labour and 42 Liberal Democrat. Only 18 intended to vote Conservative. A Times Educational Supplement/ ICM poll found 51% would vote Labour, 24% Liberal Democrat and 25% Conservative. Many were voting tactically to defeat the Tories rather than particularly preferring Labour's plans. Whilst supporting the national curriculum and the pay review body, teachers are annoyed by poorly-researched reforms and inadequate resources. Many teachers are against the selfish Conservative attitude of greed and money-making which have affected the country's moral state.

A war of attrition against their own
Article Abstract:
Peter Matthiessen was a Zen teacher for 22 years and writes fiction and journalistic books with an aim. 'In the Spirit of Crazy Horse' examines the case of an American Indian, Leonard Peltier convicted unjustly for murder. Matthiessen aimed to have Peltier released, otherwise he would have edited the book. A libel suit by an FBI agent featured in the book has kept it from publication since 1982. The main theme of the book is the typical lifestyle of a 20th century American Indian. Matthiessen's preferred style is natural history and landscape description with atmosphere. He believes that 'good writing should transcend its time.'

Nations struggle against catalogue of abuse
Article Abstract:
The United Nations World Conference on Human Rights taking place in Vienna on Jun 14, 1993, aims to re-evaluate the UN's methods. Brutal civil wars led to this first forum since 1968. Security forces in 110 countries use torture. Children are uneducated and forced to work. In 1992 1,708 people were executed and thousands were massacred. Representations to governments meet double standards and inconsistency. Many would like to see a High Commissioner for Human Rights who would integrate all non-governmental organisations.
