Teaching Ofsted a lesson
Article Abstract:
Great significance is now attached to the reports produced by the UK's Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), whatever the role Ofsted is playing a particular school. This is of considerable importance as a trend is emerging for former pupils to take legal action over alleged poor quality teaching, as a negative Ofsted report may be used to back up the case of the former pupils. This approach takes no account of the fact that a comment on teaching standards in a school as a whole should not be interpreted as a comment on the standard of teaching received by a particular pupil.

And the next lesson is ...
Article Abstract:
The issue of religious teaching and worship in schools has always been surrounded by controversy and compromise. Many teachers and educationalists are now expressing doubts about whether religious worship is a proper school activity, and even some believers are uncertain about school worship. This comes at a time when the UK is clearly moving away from being a Christian country. Schools should now move towards an assembly which is more concern with their corporate identity and with the shared values of the community.

Germany's two fat men, and a lesson from history
Article Abstract:
There are a number of similarities between Otto von Bismarck, the greatest German statesman of all time, and Chancellor Helmut Kohl. In particular, both men united Germany. However, there are also significant differences between them. Kohl lacks charisma, even though he is clearly a man of the people. In contrast, Bismarck had great charisma and gained a strong reputation for witty phrases. He was extremely gifted in foreign policy, and his memoirs have a significant place in German literature.
