Technology brings callers face-to-face
Article Abstract:
Telephones with small built-in cameras and 3-inch video screens will be available for about 400 pounds sterling at the end of 1992. Silicon chips allow compression of the video picture into high-pitched screeches which are decoded at the other end of the line into a moving image. It appears as slow motion because the images are updated only 10 times per second. At present the low-resolution images are of poor quality. Oftel is concerned about possible transmission of pornographic images. British Telecom and IBM plan a desk-top computer videophone for face-to-face meetings which can save time and money.

Killer bugs whose time has come
Article Abstract:
The recent return of the Ebola virus in Zaire has attracted world attention once more to the issue of the threat from infectious diseases. Media coverage has tended to exaggerate the risk from this particular virus, however, as there is little danger that Ebola will become a global problem. There is a short time between infection and the onset of the disease, making it relatively easy to contain.
