The Forbes factor
Article Abstract:
Malcolm Stevenson Forbes Jr, or 'Steve' Forbes, is a US presidential candidate who is the son of a magazine publisher. His policies include a flat tax, and opposition to abortion, and he came second in a Republican poll carried out in Iowa, where his ideas are popular. Forbes has had an impact on the presidential campaign, though he is unlikely to win. He is mainly self-financing, and this has been one reason for George W. Bush raising funds rapidly.

The cute little guy on the left is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, and that's his mom, Debbie. Marshall grew up to be the mean-looking guy who goes by the name of Eminem - the biggest, wickedest, whitest brother in hip hop, a million-selling rapper who any mother could be proud of. But not Debbie. She says he's been a bad, bad boy, telling the world that she neglected and abused him
Article Abstract:
Hip hop singer Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known as Eminem, is being sued by his mother, Debbie Mathers-Briggs. She claims that she was libelled in interviews her son gave in which he claimed that she neglected and abused him. Eminem's songs contain vivid descriptions of the harsh life of a poor white child, but his lawyer claims that this is all true. This case has attracted a great deal of attention, as rap is now a thriving business in the US.

It's been a swell party, but it may be drawing to a close
Article Abstract:
The US economy saw very strong growth in 1998, and this fostered a strong sense of optimism. Consumer confidence remains high, but it is also acknowledged that such high levels of economic growth cannot be sustained in 1999. The US has been able to largely ignore the rest of the world, apart from importing very large quantities of goods and therefore running up an enormous trade deficit, but this will not be possible for much longer.
