The Great Leader rules from beyond the grave
Article Abstract:
The former leader of North Korea, Kim Il Sung, died in 1994, and has yet to be replaced. North Korea is full of statues to the former leader, who set up a one-party state after the 1939 to 1945 war, and emphasised self-reliance. His son, Kim Jong Il, is due to succeed him in Oct 1997, but critics doubt he has the ability to lead North Korea, which is suffering from a food shortage. There is a debate as to when change will come, since, despite their problems, North Koreans trust their leaders and have a high level of tolerance.

How Taiwan has survived Asia's financial storm
Article Abstract:
The Taiwanese economy seems to have been much less damaged by the Asian financial crisis than those of neighbouring countries. Indeed, it may even expand by 4% to 5% in 1998. Taiwanese Prime Minister Vincent Siew believes that this is attributable to the country's willingness to establish transparent economic systems, boosting the confidence of fund managers and investors. Taiwan has enjoyed a long period of economic growth, and this has left the country with foreign reserves of $84.5 billion.
