The Madonna with a beautiful secret
Article Abstract:
A version by Giulio Romano of Raphael's 'Madonna of the Chair' became known as the 'Wellington Madonno' after its capture in 1813 from the French by the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Vitoria. It fell from popularity after people started seeing it as merely a copy of the original Raphael work, and eventually the fact that it was by Giulio was almost forgotten. However, over recent years its attractions have started to be noticed once more, and it will soon be on show again when Apsley House, the Duke of Wellington's London home, reopens to the public.

A grand project to look forward to
Article Abstract:
There are mixed views in the UK about the sort of 'grand projet' development schemes which have been undertaken in France. However, some are now starting to emerge in the UK too. These include the British Museum's plans for the space which is to be vacated by the British Library when it moves to its new building. The old Reading Room will be left intact and restored, while a new Great Court will be created. The scheme will add a great deal of space to the British Museum.

The bad news for black role models
Article Abstract:
Politicians and business leaders rarely seem to apologise even for their most serious mistakes, and this lack of apology generally goes unnoticed. Against this background, it is strange that Shadow, a member of the Gladiators television game show team, felt that he had to apologise to his audience when it was revealed that he had taken anabolic steroids. This is because he is black, and the fact that he is black and successful makes him a role model to young people.
