Democrats' best short
Article Abstract:
Former basketball star and US Senator Bill Bradley is now seeking the Democratic party's nomination as presidential candidate. He has gained a strong reputation for hard work, persistence and generosity. His campaign team is small, but his fund raising has been surprisingly strong. It is possible that he will be able to gain a considerable amount of support among ordinary people. A Bradley victory would be a strong indication of the sort of country ordinary Americans want to live in.

American dreams
Article Abstract:
A documentary by Atlantic Productions, a UK company, entitled 'American Stories: The American Dream' gives a more balanced view of the American Dream than is generally the case. It traces the history of 10 families over three generations, all of which seem to have fulfilled the American Dream. However, it also shows ways in which these families have suffered, and raises the question of whether the US really does offer a classless society.

Socialists prepare to settle for second best
Article Abstract:
The French Socialist party is well aware that it will not be able to find a presidential candidate who will beat Edouard Balladur, the right-wing prime minister who currently heads the opinion polls. Its only possible candidates, following the withdrawal or disqualification of several contenders, are party leader Henri Emmanuelli and former leader and education leader Lionel Jospin. Neither of these is very popular with voters.
