In the driving seat of the American Dream
Article Abstract:
Eileen Ford established her modelling agency as a fill-in in 1946 when she was pregnant, and relinquished control to Kate Ford in 1993. Ford made modelling a career for those on her books at the time the beauty business arrived. The agency's revenue is over 27 million pounds sterling ($42 million) a year. It receives 10,000 letters a year, sees 7,000 possibles and signs on 100. Thirty of these become career models each year and three become stars. Ford models include Jean Shripton and Brooke Shields.

It suits you, Daphne
Article Abstract:
Creating a designer outfit involves a great deal of work, as indicated by the time spent on this task for Daphne Priestley, winner of the Independent's 1995 Christian Lacroix competition. The outfit chosen, a black crepe trouser suit and a lavender satin waistcoat, needed several fittings, and the experts involved were determined to get the outfit just right. The resulting outfit is glamorous, yet practical enough to be worn frequently.

The look will live for ever
Article Abstract:
Jean Muir, who died recently, was extremely influential in the world of fashion. Her work has remained relevant over many years, and she was much more than just a fashion designer. She rarely attracted extensive publicity, and her clothes did not appeal to high-profile celebrities. However, she was highly respected for the thoroughness of her designs and their flattering nature.
