The artist as a beloved adventurer
Article Abstract:
Francis Bacon, who was born in Dublin and started painting in 1929, died on Apr 28 1992. The Tate Gallery director, Nicholas Serota, considers him to be one of the outstanding international post-war artists. Bacon enjoyed drinking in Soho pubs and other clubs anonymously and was a long-standing regular at the Colony Room. He was a homosexual and when living in Berlin went to transvestite clubs and indulged in sexual adventures. He was unsentimental about his art and spent his money on drink and gambling.
