The bottom-up theory of opera
Article Abstract:
Jonathan Miller is an opera producer who does not believe in concepts, but has a wonderful sense of humour and a creative imagination to carry him through. Miller, who believes in letting productions develop according to the reaction of the cast to the music, is producing Handel's Rodelinda at the opera house at Broomhill, a large mansion in Kent, where there is a focus on developing new composers, and where various educational projects and conferences take place.

Experiment that breaks all the boundaries
Article Abstract:
Adapting Jules Verne's strange novella 'Dr Ox's Experiment' as an opera presented a number of challenges but was also a very interesting project, according to composer Gavin Bryars. He does not see the story as a parable of manipulation, and believes that the main character is a scientist who is testing a hypothesis in a time when science was closely linked with optimism. Bryars has gained a strong reputation for taking an experimental approach.

Singing her way to the top
Article Abstract:
Being associated with modern works has certain advantages, but can make it hard to obtain work in other areas, according to soprano Sarah Leonard. She has been in great demand for modern works for many years, and is only now giving her first professional recital. This contains a number of the contemporary works with which she is associated, but also has some more traditional music, an area where she is keen to prove her abilities.
