The case for Lloyd's defence
Article Abstract:
David Coleridge, chariman of the ruling council at Lloyds will address underwriters about losses believed to be 1.5 billion pounds sterling, the worst in 300 years. Many large claims were presented between 1987-1991 as a result of unpredictable natural disasters such as the UK hurricane and the San Francisco earthquake and tragedies such as the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster. Underwriters do not expect catastrophes to occur often and can only base risk business on statistics. The only way to prevent there losses would be not to underwrite these risks. Allegations of preferential treatment for market professionals will be investigated.
