The casual approach to teaching in our universities
Article Abstract:
There is growing concern in the UK about the extensive use of freelance staff by universities. Some observers believe that the casualization of the academic workforce is bringing reduced morale, causes talented academics to leave the university system and has a negative impact on students. The Association of University Teachers is now attempting to get universities to stop using waiver clauses denying employees redundancy and unfair dismissal rights. It is establishing a draft model agreement covering temporary, fixed-term, casual and part-time employment.

What price a degree?
Article Abstract:
Some UK universities are offering courses at low prices to encourage foreign students, with the Far East market particularly targeted with special deals following the Asian economic crisis which has caused a decline of foreign applicants. Some universities are offering financial inducements, such as free travel passes and free personnel services. Some of the universities' marketing tactics have been criticised by educationalists who claim foreign students may be lured to courses that they will be unable to afford in the long-term.

What price freedom for your children?
Article Abstract:
Parents can become extremely worried when their children begin to seek greater independence. It is vital that this stage is handled properly, ensuring that an acceptable balance is struck between control and being realistic. It is important that children do learn to be independent, but it is also important that they are not placed in situations which they may not be able to handle. The stage at which children become independent depends on how mature they are and on the neighbourhood in which they live.
