The 'coolie' killing fields
Article Abstract:
The UK has still failed to publicly acknowledge that many of the 100,000 Chinese it recruited to back up its campaign on the Western Front during the first world war lost their lives. Many Chinese perished as a result of German bombing raids, disease and malnutrition, while many others were shot by British soldiers after complaining about the very poor conditions. They were exploited for the most arduous tasks, such as digging trenches, but the government of the time excused this policy by stating that it was necessary because of the war.

Mr Jiang may not like it, but people have a right to protest at his presence
Article Abstract:
Controversy over the protests marking Chinese President Jiang Zemin's state visit to the UK can be seen as highlighting a clash of cultures. The UK has traditionally tolerated protest and dissent, while China has emphasized order and obedience. The authorities in the UK have a responsibility to permit peaceful protest, but they also have a duty of hospitality towards Jiang Zemin, especially if they wish to foster more positive relations with China. Similarly, it is important for China to realize that it cannot dictate the UK's culture.

Pardon refused for army dissenters
Article Abstract:
Relatives of British soldiers shot for cowardice or desertion during the first world war have expressed opposition to the government's decision that these men will not be pardoned. The government may add their names to War Memorials and Books of Remembrance, but their relatives still believe that they should be pardoned. The government's decision was motivated by the fact that it is impossible to tell which soldiers deliberately deserted.
