The day a strange snow came down on Merseyside
Article Abstract:
A fire at the British Leather tanning factory in Sep 1994 caused a cloud of asbestos and ash to fall on the town of Birkenhead, UK. The more than 1,000 residents who were affected by the fallout from the fire are now trying to claim compensation from British Leather and Wirral Borough Council. They believe that action was not taken soon enough after it became clear that there was danger from asbestos dust. Some are now reporting health problems which they believe are associated with the fallout.

Wrongly hanged: Hanratty is found innocent
Article Abstract:
Officials at the UK Home Office are believed to have concluded that James Hanratty was innocent of the murder for which he was executed in 1962. The case has been reappraised following extensive campaigning by members of Hanratty's family and his supporters. He was convicted on unreliable evidence, and no account was taken of the fact that he had a strong alibi. Concern about his conviction played a key role in the decision by MPs to outlaw capital punishment in 1965.
