Beware the press when money and arrogance are on the loose

Article Abstract:

It cannot really be disputed that Mary Bell, who killed two boys at the age of 11, should not have received payment for her story from Gitta Sereny, who wrote a book about her case. However, focusing on the money Bell received tends to obscure some much deeper issues, especially in relation to media handling of this case. Journalists who are now hounding Bell, her family and her victims' families should be challenged, and attention should be drawn to the way in which human misery is being exploited simply to sell newspapers.

A dumb witness mouthing horror

Article Abstract:

Television portrayal of the atrocities in Bosni-Herzegovina omitted some horrific items. The 'Panorama' team made a brave, harrowing film to alter the mood of the public about intervention. Viewers rejected what they saw because it was so vivid. The message the US received did not keep up with the circumstances so President Clinton's decisions were formed on out of date facts. His plan to arm the Muslims because of the unfairness of the Owen-Vance plan will aggravate the fighting.

No withdrawal, no war, and no neutrality

Article Abstract:

It is becoming clear that the UK government is preparing to increase its military involvement in the Bosnian conflict. Prime minister John Major is making great efforts to convince Parliament of the need to support the UN operation, emphasising that many people will die if international support is withdrawn. Remaining involved at this stage should prevent the conflict escalating into a full scale Balkan war.
