When police have a stranglehold on the truth
Article Abstract:
The family of Nigerian Shiji Lapite have not yet been able to discover the truth about how he came to die in police custody in Dec 1994. There have been many rumours and half-truths, but it has been impossible even to establish the most basic facts about the incident. The results of the police post-mortem have never been disclosed, but a post-mortem carried out for the family found widespread bruising and abrasions to the deceased's head and face, and that the cause of death was asphyxia. The family suspect that he may have been held in a stranglehold.

Labour claims mantle of law and order
Article Abstract:
The Labour party's policy on crimeand punishment has undergone radical changes recently, with a move towards promises of 'toughaction.' Some observers believe that Labour has now adopted the same approach as theConservative party to this issue, but this view is rejected by shadow home secretary Jack Straw. He emphasises that the Labour party opposes privately managed prisons and that it plans anindependent investigative body to deal with police complaints and claims of miscarriages ofjustice.
