The folly of free-market education
Article Abstract:
UK universities are expected to be given an increase of 8.5% funding for the academic year 1992/93. This sum has to embrace 4% inflation and a 6% increase in student intake. This means that less can be spent per student. The Further and Higher Education Bill will take away universities' choice on student numbers. It is expected that students will be forced to supplement the rest of their fees if government funding is not increased substantially. This will make student debt higher and deter mature students from studying.

More equality - just what the doctor ordered
Article Abstract:
The UK government is looking at the 1980 Black report into inequalities in health as it draws up its new public health policy. This report stated that measures which have an impact on employment, housing schools, transport and poverty all have an impact on health too. If the government were to take up the recommendations of this report, then there would be implications for a number of different government departments. Its recommendations included a large rise in child benefit as a means of dealing with child poverty.

Giants of poverty yet to be slain
Article Abstract:
The fiftieth anniversary of Sir William Beveridge's report falls in a particularly uninspiring and bankrupt year,1992, so another visionary is called for. A new Beveridge report should be a grand conception of a new order. The Beveridge Report of 1942 was extremely popular, but it was not acted upon, although subsequent social policy discussion has been based on it. The Labour party has a 15-person committee including expert and non-political inquirers investigating poverty in Beveridge style.
