The man who would be president - until he's elected
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party's campaigning for the forthcoming general election is very much focusing on prime minister John Major, with voters being asked to endorse him personally rather than the party as a whole. Polls indicate that Major is less personally popular than Labour party leader Tony Blair, but more popular than the Conservative party itself. For this reason, the Conservative party has opted for a presidential-style election campaign. However, this is not likely to be successful in a country where the state of a political party is as important as the qualities of its leader.

Will the Euro-rebels yield on the night?
Article Abstract:
The forthcoming government debate on an Opposition motion on Europe will prove extremely testing for prime minister John Major. It is likely to force the hand of the nine Conservative rebels who lost the party whip in Nov 1994 by refusing to support the government on the European Finance Bill, and if they fail again to back the government then there could be a confidence vote which could even bring down the government altogether. It seems that John Major must make great efforts to ensure that he wins this debate if his party is to have any chance of winning the next general election.

Cabinet tilts to the left in reshuffle
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major has been able to build on his victory in the recent battle for the leadership of the Conservative party with a Cabinet reshuffle which has instigated a move towards the centre-left. Michael Heseltine, the former president of the Board of Trade, has particularly benefited, being appointed First Secretary and deputy prime minister. Some observers claim that this is the price John Major has had to pay for Heseltine's loyalty.
