The ponies killed by kindness
Article Abstract:
There are now only around 3,000 ponies on Dartmoor, England, compared with around 40,000 in the mid-20th century. There are very few pure-bred Dartmoor ponies, and these ponies have now been declared 'vulnerable' by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. Ironically, much of the decline in the number of Dartmoor ponies can be attributed to an excess of human concern for the breed, rather than to neglect. In particular, there has been growing public opposition to the pony meat trade. Some observers believe that the best solution may be to reduce the number of ponies still further and gradually purify the breed.

Mystery. Murder. And half a century of suspense
Article Abstract:
There is continued speculation among residents of Hagley, England, about the identity of the woman whose body was found in a hollow wych-hazel tree in nearby woods in Apr 1943. Many theories have been put forward over the years, including the possibility that the woman, who had one hand missing, was executed for crimes against a coven or that she was murdered for knowing too much about a pro-German spy ring. There is evidence to suggest that witches' sabbaths were regularly held in the woods before the second world war.

Showdown on the farm
Article Abstract:
Animal-rights campaigners are protesting strongly against Hill Grove Farm in Oxfordshire, England, where cats are bred and sold for scientific experiments. Some campaigners have been barred from the vicinity of the establishment, prompting protests from Liberty. Campaigners have set up Save the Hillgrove Cats, which now has a mailing list of 5,000 and organizes transport to the site for protestors from across the UK. A protest planned for Sep 6, 1998, could attract up to 3,000 people.
