The resurrection that never was
Article Abstract:
The Catholic Church in the UK is in crisis, with average mass attendance falling by 55,000 in the period 1994-1995. By 2005, Sunday observance is likely to have declined to 600,000, from 1.135 million in 1995, according to Cafod, the Catholic development agency. This figures contrast strongly with the revival in Catholicism which had been predicted by some observers following a number of high-profile conversions to Catholicism. It is indeed true that there have been some conversions, but these by no means balance out the serious decline in attendance among ordinary people.

Never mind the job, some of us want a life
Article Abstract:
It is very common in the UK for employers to expect staff to sacrifice their family life in order to meet professional commitments. This is a particular problem for women who also have responsibility for young children. However, it is also a situation which is being increasingly recognized by male employees. There are signs that younger employees are beginning to express opposition to having their lives dominated by work. However, there is little quality research which they can use to back up their view that working lives can be very damaging.

Britain's canals are dying
Article Abstract:
The future of the UK's canals is becoming a great cause for concern following several years in which dry winters have followed hot summers. A drought in summer 1997 would force the closure of some canals, bringing severe problems for the few remaining people who earn their living from working on the canals. More attention is now being given to controlling water flow, and this could serve to improve the situation. However, many observers feel that restrictions could have a very negative impact on tourism.
