The secret sex life of Marie Curie
Article Abstract:
Marie Curie's influence in furthering scientific knowledge is very well documented, but little attention is now given to her personal life. In fact, she had a love affair with a married fellow scientist some years after the death of her husband, and this caused a great scandal when it became public knowledge. Science has traditionally been seen as a cold, logical activity, but it is worth remembering that scientists' private lives can reveal a lot about the way they work and the discoveries they make.

Weighing up the risk business
Article Abstract:
The Health and Safety Executive is organising a conference on risk assessment on Oct 5 1992. Organiser Dr Sam Harbison, Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations, found that international bodies produced uncoordinated directives. A US study shows that most benefit occurs when rules concentrate on direct safety measures. Principles of risk assessment applied to significant factors which might cause damage to human health or the environment are worthwhile. Public comment is desirable.

Miracle cure, or mere illusion?
Article Abstract:
Gene therapy was heralded as offering the potential to cure a range of diseases, but the actual results have proved disappointing. It is now thought unlikely that any human diseases will be cured by gene therapy in the forseeable future, especially as research into human gene transfer has produced only inconclusive results. However, gene therapy is becoming increasingly commercialised, and more than 100 clinical trials are underway or about to start in the US.
