The terror inside women's prisons
Article Abstract:
The vast majority of the bullying that takes place in women's prisons in the UK is related to drugs. In many cases, strong women control drugs rackets, appointing others to act as their agents. The drugs are brought in by the weakest women, who may be forced to set up visits in which their visitor transfers drugs to them. The Prison Service has been aware for some time that addicted prisoners use vicious methods to remove drugs from fellow prisoners who are concealing them, but no firm action has been taken to put a stop to this.

Too big for his boots? Inside the court of Lord Irvine
Article Abstract:
UK Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine of Lairg is very willing to make his expertise available to the government. He does not feel that claims that he wields excessive power are justified, and prefers to wait to be judged by his achievements. He acknowledges that he has enemies, but feels that he is on good terms with his Cabinet colleagues. He has inevitably attracted some controversy, especially with his responsibility for driving forward policy on Cabinet committees.

Not a hope against the inside dealer
Article Abstract:
Illegal drugs are available to patients at many psychiatric units in the UK, with drug dealers seeing such units as a source of large profits. This is partly the result of increasing use of illegal drugs in society as a whole, and partly the result of changes in the way the mentally ill are cared for. They have been given more freedom and rights, and usually cannot be prevented from leaving a psychiatric unit if they wish to.
