Is the US ready to go colour-blind?
Article Abstract:
There is growing tension in the US about the possibility of the abolition of affirmative action programmes, which were devised with the intention of improving opportunities for ethnic minorities and women. Many people feel that affirmative action has drifted a long way from its origins, with such programmes now positively favouring ethnic minorities and women, rather than simply putting them on an equal footing. President Bill Clinton is still in favour of affirmative action, but it is now increasingly likely that such programmes will be dropped.

Gay, Sir, and ready to serve
Article Abstract:
In both the US and the UK, courts have ruled against allowing gays to serve in the armed forces. However, the publicity surrounding this issue will at least change public perceptions on homosexuality. Gay men and lesbians are now starting to be seen as being present at the very heart of society, and the gay rights movement has taken on a completely new dimension. Homosexuals are now demanding equal responsibilities with others, rather than equal rights.
