Time to shift money from universities to colleges
Article Abstract:
It is possible to argue that there are significant problems associated with the current structure of the UK's higher education system. Full-time study certainly produces well-educated graduates, and is the easiest system for academics to handle. However, it is expensive and inflexible. It means that highly intelligent people do not enter the employment market until they are at least 21, and in many cases they have little experience of the world of work. It is now time to take a more flexible approach to higher education, encouraging evening study, distance learning and short intensive programmes.

Cashing in
Article Abstract:
Students arriving at a UK university for the first time will find that there are a considerable number of initial expenses. These include tuition fees, accommodation fees and books. Many students will need to apply for a student loan, and some may also be eligible for hardship loans of up to 250 pounds sterling a year. Other sources of funds for students include charitable trusts and scholarships. Banks will allow students to have an interest-free overdraft of between 750 pounds sterling and 1,200 pounds sterling.
