Tribal rifts wreck Kenya's chance to throw out Moi
Article Abstract:
Initial results from the parallel civil, parliamentary and presidential elections in Kenya indicate that President Daniel arap Moi has gained a comfortable victory over his nearest rival, Democratic Party candidate Mwai Kibaki. However, these results have been rejected by Kibaki and fellow opposition candidate Raila Odinga, who claim that there has been widespread electoral fraud. Ethical and regional issues are extremely important in Kenyan politics, and most members of the larger tribes are now strongly opposed to Moi's government. However, they still seem unable to remove him from power.

No turning back for Red Cross orphans
Article Abstract:
The staff of the Red Cross orphanage in Kigali, Rwanda, were forced by the Rwandan civil war to flee into Zaire with 186 children aged three-15. In Zaire, conditions were extremely difficult, and the staff made great personal sacrifices to ensure that the orphans could eat. They walked many miles, and received no help from local people. However, only eight children died through hunger and disease, and the orphans fared better than many Rwandan children who were cared for by their parents. They are now among the first Rwandan refugees to be repatriated.

Mobutu's dying city plays out a last sick joke
Article Abstract:
The residents of Kinshasa, Zaire, an isolated, poor city which is soon to be taken over by rebel forces, are particularly concerned about dangers posed by the government army. It is believed that deserters and broken army units are heading towards the city and are responsible for acts of vandalism and looting. There could be particular problems if soldiers are not paid the money which they are due to receive shortly. Many people remember extensive pillaging which took place in 1991 and 1993, and blame this on President Mobutu Sese Seko.
