Turmoil at the Telegraph
Article Abstract:
The unexpected resignation of Max Hastings as editor of the 'Daily Telegraph' after 10 years has prompted a bitter battle for control of the newspaper. Under Hastings, the newspaper had been completely transformed, but had managed to retain the highly conservative tone which appealed to existing readers. However, Hastings felt that a loss for the Conservative party at the next general election would make the party move very much more to the right, and this would destroy the uneasy balance between his views and those of Conrad Black, the newspaper's owner. Developments at the 'Daily Telegraph' are very much connected with those at the 'Spectator,' another publication owned by Black and also very right wing.

Blood sports meet their Waterloo?
Article Abstract:
Public support for fox hunting is now at record low levels, according to a recent poll, and similar sports involving animals, such as stag hunting and grouse shooting, are also being seen more negatively. This trend is even having an impact on political developments, and it now seems likely that MPs will approve a private member's Bill entitled Wild Mammals (Protection). Over recent years, people have been made much more aware of environmental issues, and this in turn has affected attitudes towards animal welfare.

A fag-end of a job
Article Abstract:
Those who smoke have the responsibility of making their own decisions, according to UK Tobacco Manufacturers' Association Executive Director John Carlisle. He rejects claims that people become addicted to tobacco, and does not feel personally damaged by people who speak out very strongly against the tobacco industry. He is prepared to defend the industry, and believes that his abrasive political career has placed him in a good position to do so.
