UK: ANIMAL TESTING TO BE KEPT SECRET
Article Abstract:
The Government is to give laboratories conducting tests on animals official exemption from the Freedom of Information Act when it becomes law. Information about tests on new drugs and medical procedures will be withheld to protect laboratory workers from attacks by animal rights activists. However, animal welfare groups fear that the Government is using threats from extremists as a smokescreen to withhold information. Laboratories apply for licences from the Home Office before doing any tests. They include details about the purpose of the tests and numbers of animals involved.

The battle for the book sales of the 21st century
Article Abstract:
There has been a significant increase in sales of books online, a trend which has created a great deal of controversy. Small booksellers believe that their business could be threatened by rising online sales, while established bookstores have sought to defend their market share against new online ventures. Online sales of books and music together are set to rise more than 600 million pounds sterling by 2001, according to Forrest Research. The UK Publishers' Association has warned that buying a book online from the US could infringe copyright law.

Reinventing the book
Article Abstract:
Laptop technology and widespread Internet access are now beginning to make the electronic book a genuine possibility. Four electronic book reading devices are to be made available by autumn 1999, and online bookstores are preparing to deliver books via the Internet to these reading devices and palm-top computers. There are mixed views about whether electronic books will ever fully replace conventional books, and even reading device manufacturers do not claim that they are able to replace the look and feel of printed material.
