UK: GOVERNMENT TASK FORCE FOR RAILWAYS
Article Abstract:
With confidence in the management of the rail network declining due to delays in rail services caused by maintenance work, the UK government has set up an emergency taskforce to liase with the rail industry on a day-to-day basis. Although Railtrack, the network operator, is a private operator and the government cannot issue orders to it, ministers are anxious to bring back normal services as quickly as possible while maintaining safety. The taskforce will also ensure adequate information is issued to the public and the government, examine compensation for passengers, and help troubleshoot unresolved problems. The taskforce will consist of representatives from Railtrack, the Office of the Rail Regulator, the Strategic Rail Authority, the Health & Safety Executive, the Association Train Operating Companies and the Rail Passenger Council.

UK: PROFITS OF RAIL COMPANIES TO BE CAPPED
Article Abstract:
The Shadow Strategic Rail Authority has revealed that the profits of train operating companies are to be capped. From now on all companies that win franchises will be the subject of a profits tax that will collect all surplus returns from operating companies. The money will be collected in a central 'pot' for the whole railway industry to ensure a higher level of investment in the sector. This extra money is expected to be distributed by the Authority in order to fund what it deems 'worthy' projects. The result is expected to be hundreds of millions of pounds more money for the railway network.
