UK: GOVERNMENT RELIEVES SMALL FIRMS OF AUDITS
Article Abstract:
Stephen Byers, the UK secretary of state for trade and industry, has revealed that up to 225,000 small and medium-sized businesses are to be relieved of the statutory requirement for an annual audit. The turnover threshold above which a full audit will be required is to be increased from GB[pound] 350,000 to GB[pound] 4.8mn. The change will occur in two stages, with a GB[pound] 1mn limit coming into force on 31 July 2000. The government will then reconsider the statutory requirements for companies in the GB[pound] 1mn-4.8mn turnover range. The total cost saving to businesses of the change of plan will be over GB[pound] 200mn per year.

Morning-after pill should be sold over the counter, say campaigners
Article Abstract:
The UK campaigning group, the Birth Control Trust, has called for the morning after contraceptive pill to become available over the counter at pharmacies. They are to be backed by other family planning groups, MPs and peers. It says that 70% of abortions could be prevented by the wider availability of emergency contraception. A pilot scheme has been run in Washington where pharmacies have been issuing the drug without prescription. Half of the women who have used the service said that if the drug was prescription only they would not have used it and just wait to see if they were pregnant.

UK: CALL FOR OVER THE COUNTER SALE OF PILL
Article Abstract:
A call has been made by a group of MPs in the UK for the government to back plans for over the counter sales of the morning after pill with out the need for a prescription. The MPs, aware of possible opposition, say that the sale of the contraceptive would be restricted to trained pharmacists and strictly regulated. The call comes following a decision by the UK producer of contraceptives, Schering, applying for a licence enabling it to sell its latest morning after pill over the counter.
