Retail theatre makes a stylish comeback
Article Abstract:
Department stores in the UK are currently enjoying a revival, having been spurned by City of London analysts for some time because they were regarded as being weighed down by their history. Department stores achieved a 10% rise in sales in 1996, and were the most rapidly expanding retail sector. Property developers now see department stores as an essential element in a shopping centre development, and extensive investment is being made in refurbishing department store buildings which have been neglected.

Allders warns on profits
Article Abstract:
The UK department store Allders, has announced that it is expecting pre-tax profits for the present financial year to be below the expectations of analysts. They will not however slip below GB 19mn; this is an alteration on the GB 23.5mn originally expected. The company is attributing the decline to a mis-timed summer sale and the rises in interest rates, which have kept shoppers away from the store.
