UK: HSBC SUFFERS HACKER ATTACK
Article Abstract:
HSBC's computer systems were the focus of a sustained but ultimately unsuccessful hacking attack in 1999, chairman, John Bond, has revealed. The UK-based banking group's critical access control system was not infiltrated even though during the two-day onslaught, the unidentified person used 150mn passwords. The attack is being regarded as the most sophisticated so far involving a firm in the financial services sector.

UK: EGG AFFECTED BY CYBER-CRIME
Article Abstract:
Egg, the Internet banking arm of Prudential, is believed to have been the target of an organised crime syndicate, which has removed hundreds of thousands of pounds from the company. Although the hackers are not thought to have taken money from individual customers' accounts, details of the suspected fraud were unveiled by the National Crime Squad and three men arrested. Egg, which has 1.2mn customers, has found maintaining hacker-proof systems on the Internet particularly difficult, although has had no previous security problems. The security of Internet banking has already been questioned after a series of lapses at major companies, including Barclays.

UK: HSBC OPPOSITION TO UNIVERSAL BANK DROPPED
Article Abstract:
Moves by the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to be more flexible regarding funding for the Universal Bank, the proposed Post Office bank, is expected to result in HSBC dropping its opposition to the plans. HSBC is understood to be prepared to contribute to the GB[pound] 150mn annual running costs of Universal Bank, following the disclosure that Internet banks, electricity, gas and water utilities would also make contributions. The Universal Bank will provide basic bank accounts for the 3.5mn people in the UK without a bank account. Royal Bank of Scotland is now the only major bank in the UK still to oppose the scheme.
