UK: UNIONS TO DISCUSS JOB PLANS WITH CORUS

As a result of fears that Corus will cut up to 2,500 jobs at Llanwern in South Wales, trade union leaders are to hold meetings with the steel group, created in 1999 by the merger of British Steel and Hoogovens. Corus has already announced plans for 4,000 UK redundancies, and it may now suspend investment of GB[pound] 35mn in the South Wales plant.

Officials at the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation are warning that strike action could be instigated, following the announcement by Corus, the Anglo-Dutch steel producer, of 4,000 job losses in England and Wales. Trade Union officials have warned that a ballot for strike action will be held if workers reject compulsory redundancy.
