US wary as Iran tries to exorcise its demons
Article Abstract:
Iranian President Mohamed Khatami is very keen for his country to improve its links with the outside world, especially the US. His official statements are increasingly reflecting US policies on the Middle East, but the US is still interpreting his stance as a challenge. He is keen to discuss the $11 billion which the US owes to the pre-revolutionary Iranian regime, while the US wants to focus on Iranian actions which it regards as terrorism. The issue of Iran's opposition to the Middle East peace process is also a stumbling block to improved relations between the US and Iran.

What madness is this? Bombs are not the way to peace
Article Abstract:
Western countries are taking a very hypocritical approach to dealing with the perceived threat from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. In particular, they are conveniently forgetting that they supported him in his war against Iran. They must be aware that war is about real human suffering, not merely about ridding the Middle East of someone they choose to portray as a tyrant. An air attack on Iraq would kill large numbers of Iraqi civilians, but will not make Saddam Hussein more willing to cooperate with United Nations weapons inspectors.

The secrets which sparked the crisis
Article Abstract:
The conflict between the US and Iraq over United Nations (UN) weapons inspections has resulted from the desire of the UN to gain knowledge about Iraq's system of weapons concealment, rather than just about the weapons themselves. This approach was first adopted by Nikita Svidovic when he was head of the UN Special Commission on Iraq, and was later pursued by former US marine Scott Ritter. The UN suspects that Iraq is still concealing large numbers of documents relating to its biological programme.
