Ukrainians' new navy sails into a sea of troubles
Article Abstract:
Russia and the newly independent Ukraine have a tense relationship in 1993, although theoretically their differences have been settled. The closed Crimean port of Sevastopol has Ukrainian ships, including the first Ukrainian-built ship, the Hetman Sagaidachny, and Russian warships of the Black Sea Fleet. Crimea is part of Ukraine but declared itself a republic. Russian President Yeltsin and Ukrainian leader Leonid Kravchuk agreed to divide the Black Sea Fleet but the practicalities would be difficult. Many Russians would prefer Crimea to return to Russia.

People power never before seen in quiet cosy Britain
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the depth of public reaction to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, has significant implications for the future of the monarchy in the UK. Many people have chosen to show their grief in public, and in doing so they are adopting a defiant stance towards the Royal Family, which they regard as having caused unhappiness for Diana, Princess of Wales. Ordinary people are now no longer prepared to accept that the monarchy cannot have a public face.

A grudging yes for the President
Article Abstract:
Although a market economy is being established in Russia, the majority of people are poor, and resent it. Some think life was better under communism. In Nizhni Novgorod, previously Gorky, a privatisation scheme provides a model for other towns. It hopes to resume the status of a major trading town which it had prior to 1917. The referendum on economic reform in Apr 1993 may have a negative result, but President Yeltsin is five times more popular than any of his rivals.
