Up, up and away...
Article Abstract:
Anthony Clarke has adapted The Red Balloon, by Albert Lamorisse, into a musical for children, which will run at the Olivier National Theatre, London, until August 30 1996. Clarke identified with the character of Pascal, a solitary figure, when he was a five-year-old schoolboy, unable to speak French, at a French school in Algiers. The idea for the musical came to him whilst artistic director of the Contact Theatre, in Manchester, UK, when he noticed a lack of productions for the young.

Let's all play piggy in the middle
Article Abstract:
Theatre director Elijah Moshinsky has welcomed the opportunity to tackle the production of a stage version of William Golding's 'The Lord of the Flies.' He has encountered a rather sceptical reaction to his project, which uses young people rather than professional actors. He believes that the production will benefit from the fact that the participants have started from scratch and take nothing for granted.

Caution: theatre director at work
Article Abstract:
A key part of the role of a theatre director is to ensure that actors perform to the best of their abilities, according to Patrick Marber, who is currently working on a production of '1953,' a tragedy by poet Craig Raine. He relies a great deal on instinct, but also consults carefully with the designer and the actors. He mainly allows the text to dominate, and does not try to be too innovative.
