Vazgen Sarkissian
Article Abstract:
Politician Vazgen Sarkissian graduated from Yerevan State Institute of Physical Education in 1979. He subsequently worked as a physical instruction teacher in the village school in Ararat, Armenia. He was the Communist Youth League leader at the cement factory in Ararat from 1983 to 1986. He was elected to parliament in the 1990 elections, and until 1992 spent a lot of time in the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, commanding troops fighting against Soviet and Azerbaijani forces. He was defence minister from 1992 to 1993 and state minister in charge of defence from 1993 to 1995. He was elected prime minister in 1999.

Elias Freij
Article Abstract:
Politician Elias Freij graduated from the Bishop Gobat School in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1940. He led the local branch of the Holy Land Mission in the early 1950s, and was appointed to the municipal council in Bethlehem, West Bank, in 1960. He became the town's mayor in 1972, and was re-elected in 1976, remaining in office until he resigned for health reasons in May 1997. He was one of the few Palestinian politicians prepared to meet Israeli politicians.

Hrair Maroukhian
Article Abstract:
Politician Hrair Maroukhian trained as an engineer, but was strongly committed to politics from an early age. He joined the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), the leading political party in the Armenian diaspora, as a young man, and later served as Chmn of the Central Committee in Iran. He was elected to the Bureau of the ARF in 1963, and became Chmn in 1971. He made preparations to live permanently in Armenia, but was expelled in 1992.
