Wall Street looks the other way
Article Abstract:
US financiers tend to give little attention to Europe, even though economic output in Europe is still larger than in East Asia or North America. This is because in current trading terms Europe is no longer particularly important to the US, because western Europe does not come across as a very exciting market and because Europe has become too heavily involved in plans for monetary union. It is perhaps time for Europe to learn a lesson from the US, where industrial restructuring has led to job losses but has created a much more competitive atmosphere.

Wall St tumble would not mean the end of the world
Article Abstract:
It is very possible that Wall Street will fall sharply before the end of 1996. Against this background, a key issue is whether there is a clear connection between developments in financial markets and developments in the real economy. It is likely that a fall in Wall Street would have a noticeable impact on European share prices, but this would not necessarily have serious consequences in the UK. There is now a strong share-owning culture in the UK, and if some rich people sell of their shareholdings, some wealth may flow down to ordinary people.

Now we can see how old age looks
Article Abstract:
The UK's pensions and savings regimes are set to see many changes, according to a report from a committee established by the National Association of Pension Funds. It will become increasingly important to target state pensions at people in greatest need, with more money going to the oldest people and less to those who have only recently retired. The report also recommends a new National Pension Scheme, under which people would be obliged to save towards their retirement.
