Bobbe Brox
Article Abstract:
Singer Josephine Brock, known as Bobbe Brox, formed an act with her two sisters while they were teenagers. Their first success came in 1921 with their interpretation of 'Everybody Step' in the 'Music Box Revue,' one of a series of shows being produced by Irving Berlin at the Music Box Theater. They also featured in these shows in 1923 and 1924, and in 1926 joined the cast of 'The Cocoanuts' with the Marx Brothers. They gained recording contracts with Brunswick and Victor, and in 1928 made their screen debut in the short film 'Down South.'

Todd Duncan
Article Abstract:
Singer Todd Duncan studied at Butler University and the College of Music and Fine Arts in Indianapolis. He gained a master's degree in voice from Columbia University, and in 1931 became a Professor of Voice at Howard University in Washington DC. He was recommended to George Gershwin by music critic Olin Downes, and took on the role of Porgy in Gershwin's 'Porgy and Bess.' His last show was 'Lost in the Stars,' in 1949, but he also appeared in the 1955 film 'Unchained.'

Helen Forrest
Article Abstract:
Singer Helen Forrest left home at 14 to sing with a dance band formed by one of her older brothers. She was employed to sing commercials on the radio, and in 1935 had a regular slot on the CBS show 'Blue Velvet Hour.' In 1938, she was hired by Artie Shaw to replace vocalist Billie Holiday. She made a record with Lionel Hampton and his all-black orchestra in 1940, and made 41 recordings with Shaw. She was voted the best female vocalist in 1942 and 1943.
