We're trapped, but a 'treaty' could save us
Article Abstract:
Unemployment in Britain in the 90's is similar to that of the 20's, when Keynes analysed the economy and recommended large amounts of public spending to encourage spending. Prices respond differently in the 90's so modern Keynesians suggest devaluation or abandoning the ERM, although Keynes would expect stable prices to be essential. Increasing unemployment can reduce inflation but it would restrict the development of the former Communist countries. International cooperation would help rebuild Eastern Europe.

Full employment with a difference
Article Abstract:
Full employment could be achieved in the UK if it were a declared goal. Since 1980 monetary policy discounted full employment in favour of controlling inflation. A full employment policy would be beneficial to government finances as one in six people in 1993 receives income support. Economists find that the supply consequences of a depression are not automatically reversed by recovery. There is a need to rebuild supply by reducing obstacles to market transactions and through positive intervention.

Save small firms and they will save us
Article Abstract:
Investment behaviour is volatile because of erratic government policy. Analysts make accusations about short-term views of sources of investment funds. Banks and fund managers often behave like speculators, not investors. Small companies have liquidity crises because of late payment of bills. The government could help by introducing tax breaks on dividends from firms quoted on the Unlisted Securities Market.
