What Genghis has to teach us about mergers
Article Abstract:
Financial experts in the UK are critical of the fact that plans for the merger of pharmaceutical companies SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome have been abandoned. They believe that large consolidating mergers bring considerable advantages, especially where pioneering technologies are involved. However, nobody can really be certain whether this would have been the case with SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome. It is possible that the two companies could now come together through one taking over the other, but it may be advisable simply not to go ahead with a deal at all.

Is it time the DTI was disbanded?
Article Abstract:
The future of the UK Dept of Trade and Industry (DTI) seems uncertain as Board of Trade Pres Margaret Beckett clashes with other government ministers, particularly Chancellor Gordon Brown, on a wide range of issues. Some observers believe that it is now time to consider disbanding the DTI completely, with some of its functions being taken over by the Treasury and other departments. This may allow the Treasury to fulfill its ambition of having a wider role in the UK economy.
