What 'The Sun' says about Blair and Europe
Article Abstract:
UK Labour party leader Tony Blair was reported recently in the Sun newspaper as being prepared to abandon the UK's veto on important European legislation. It is certainly true that he does not rule out the possibility that his party may agree to an extension of majority voting in the areas of industrial, social, regional and environmental policy, and it is also true that he has not shown any unwillingness so far to sign up to the Social Chapter. However, on all other issues relating to the European Union his policies differ very little from those of the Conservative party.

The beef war shows just how much we need Europe
Article Abstract:
European institutions are clearly imperfect, but they offer the only way to resolve the current conflict between the UK and France over the latter's continued refusal to allow imports of beef from the UK. It must be recognized that the UK has a strong case against France, which is defying the European Commission's decision to lift the ban on British beef, but that this does not constitute a case against the European Union. Only the UK's entitlement to redress through the European Court of Justice would allow it to win the political point against France.
