What if the trickle into Swiss francs turns into a speculative flood?
Article Abstract:
There are growing fears that the Swiss franc could come to be seen by investors as a safe haven as European economic and monetary union approaches. Switzerland has coped very well with currency speculation in the past, but its economy is currently rather fragile. For this reason, the Swiss National Bank is determined to ensure that the Swiss economy does not become a victim of monetary instability in Europe. This could be achieved by pegging the Swiss franc in some way to the euro, but this would presuppose that Switzerland will join the European Union.

Leaders tested by turmoil in the Far East
Article Abstract:
There will be a number of key issues under discussion at the 1998 G8 summit. These will include the Asian financial crisis, unrest in Indonesia, employment and international and computer crime. Leaders will also discuss nuclear weapons testing in India and Third World debt. The G8 is very influential within the International Monetary Fund, and its views will therefore take on great importance. It is likely that the G8 will promise to assist all highly indebted poor countries to become part of the initiative agreed at the Lyon G7 summit in 1996.

'Who do I call, if I want to talk to Europe?' sniffed Kissinger. Between now and 30 June, the answer to that question will be Britain - and if it has any sense, America will be calling often
Article Abstract:
The UK will hold the presidency of the European Union during the first six months of 1998, a time when vital decisions will be made about the European Union's future. Most importantly, it will be necessary to choose the countries which will implement the single European currency on Jan 1, 1999, and to instigate negotiations aimed at enlarging the European Union to include former Communist countries in eastern Europe. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has already learned that it can be difficult to make practical progress within the European Union.
