When mothers defy the mullahs
Article Abstract:
Projects supported by western aid and development agencies, such as the clothing factory in the village of Thanapara, Bangladesh, have provided valuable income and employment for poor communities. However, such schemes have also brought western secularism into conflict with religious fundamentalism in Islamic countries. In Bangladesh, there have been many instances of women being criticised for working outside the home, and some observers are now beginning to claim that aid projects, although benefiting communities financially, can cause social conflict.

How much intolerance can we tolerate?
Article Abstract:
There are particularly strong tensions between liberal and authoritarian ethics in the US, where they are most poignantly shown in the conflict over abortion. There are also more frequent clashes between faith and secularism in the UK's increasingly multi-cultural society. The dominant ethos in the UK is now post-Christian, with relativism making truth dependent only on the circumstances in which a person lives. Liberalism is under attack from many directions, especially in the area of education.
