When stars get the shakes
Article Abstract:
Astronomers have discovered a new type of star, known as a magnetar. These stars have crusts of solid iron and extremely dense fluid-filled interiors. They occasionally shudder with enormous energy, and have very powerful magnetic fields. They are sometimes subject to such strong forces that their crusts are ripped apart. Astronomers now know that magnetars are responsible for the repeated bursts of cosmic radiation first detected in the 1970s.
