When bigger isn't better
Article Abstract:
The first Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art has four main elements. These are an official international show entitled 'Trace,' a fringe, the John Moores painting competition and New Contemporaries, an exhibition of work by art students. The event as a whole covers 350 artists, which seems to be too many, as most people will find themselves unable to really look properly at so many works. However, some work is worth seeing, including a sequence of short films made by Swiss Roman Signer. These can be seen at the Bluecoat Gallery.

Master of the near-miss
Article Abstract:
The Whitechapel Gallery in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition entitled 'David Alfaro Siqueiros: Portrait of a Decade.' This shows the work of the most politically active of the three Mexican Muralists, and focuses on the period 1930 to 1940. At the beginning of the 1930s, Siqueiros was in jail, and this gave him the opportunity to take up painting again after working for the Communist party and the miners' union. His painting shows a strong urge to communicate, and borrows from many different art forms.

L'homme a la mode
Article Abstract:
The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France, is currently holding a retrospective exhibition of the paintings of Fernand Leger. His works all address the world confidently, and have an air of calm grandeur and optimism. He destroyed most of his earliest work, and his extant work starts in 1910. Some observers believe that the quality of his work began to decline in the mid-1920s, when he started to consolidate. This exhibition seems to confirm that view.
