Why Max fails to set the Standard
Article Abstract:
The Evening Standard, the regional evening newspaper for London, England, was once extremely influential. However, its influence has waned under current Editor Max Hastings. He is an extremely talented journalist, but editing a daily evening newspaper does not fit in well with his style of working. He has a clear disdain for the details of London life, and this means that he is not seen as being at the cutting edge. The newspaper seems to do little to reflect the excitement of the current social scene in London.

That nice Mr Pinter
Article Abstract:
British journalists often feel that they can say whatever they like, according to playwright Harold Pinter. He is angered by the fact that a conversation he had with Tom Stoppard was incorrectly reported and showed him in a negative light. He now takes no notice of what critics say about his work, although he was very upset by the negative reaction in 1958 to 'The Birthday Party,' his first professionally produced play. His current projects include directing a new play by Simon Gray, 'The Late Middle Classes.'

Feud - and it's a scorcher!
Article Abstract:
The conflict between the Guardian newspaper and right-wing journalist Paul Johnson is becoming increasingly bitter. Guardian diarist Matthew Norman refuses to discuss any serious issue with Johnson, while Johnson takes no notice at all of Norman's existence. The two sides have clashed on various issues, including Johnson's friendship with former Conservative cabinet minister Jonathan Aitken and his views about how newspaper editors exert their power.
