Where have all the flowers gone?
Article Abstract:
The Kent Trust for Nature Conservation has volunteers who look after stretches of roadside verges to encourage plant diversity and wildlife. Kent local authorities decided on a 'good practice' policy, but other areas are restricted by budgets. Verges used to be kept full of wild flowers and free of weeds by lengthmen, passing horses and cattle, but modern council policy is more interested in road safety than nature. Cutting is done before seeds are dropped and mown grass is left to aid tough weeds to thrive. The Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) believes verges are important because they show regional differences.

Now Sophie's not a naughty girl any more
Article Abstract:
East Berkshire Community Health NHS Trust is running 20 formal parenting classes on a trial basis. These classes, which have attracted 160 parents in total, aim to allow parents to obtain advice from professionals and to learn from each other. The key philosophy underlying all the advice given is that parents should avoid reacting to bad behaviour in their children, as this can encourage further bad behaviour. Those who have participated have welcomed being made aware of basic principles.

A farewell to farms and blacksmiths
Article Abstract:
The decline of the agricultural village of Winstone in Gloucestershire gives an insight into the current state of most agricultural areas in England. It mirrors a countrywide trend where 100 farmers a week are giving up land. In the last five years 10,000 farms have been wound up, largely because of falling incomes and the problems associated with European Community quotas. Left behind are empty schools and aging residents who remember life before electricity.
