Who lives, who dies, who chooses?
Article Abstract:
In Jul 1992 the British Medical Association called for a public debate on health-care rationing. The NHS spends a lot of money on keeping alive those in a persistent vegetative state. The money could be spent on those waiting for hip replacements, coronary bypasses and kidney dialysis. Health authority purchasing plans do not allocate resources according to defined rationing schedules. The doctor-patient relationship is paramount and decisions based on the use of resources would destroy it.

Just what the junior doctor ordered
Article Abstract:
The European Commission threatened the UK with legal action unless it revised medical training requirements which caused junior doctors to work an 80-hour week. The training system was not designed, it evolved. Doctors trained in other EC member states complained about the situation when trying to work in the UK. The General Medical Council will recommend legislation accepting the EC Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training. Training periods will be halved from 1995.

Avebury's ancient mystery uncovered
Article Abstract:
A Neolithic avenue of stones has been discovered at Avebury, Wiltshire, England. There are a number of prehistoric sites forming a complex at Averbury that dates back to 6,000 years ago. Six sarsen stones have been found by an archeological team from three British universities. The scale of the Avebury complex is greater than previously thought, and the symbolism of the Avebury monuments has to be reinterpreted in the light of the new discovery.
