Who won the battle of Portadown, 1995?
Article Abstract:
The marching season in Northern Ireland has over recent years been a time of violent clashes between Protestants and Catholics. However, it had been expected that the situation would be less tense, given that the ceasefire appears to be holding. This was not the case in Portadown, where Protestant Orangemen were determined to march through a Catholic part of the town, ignoring the protests of Catholic residents. The fact that the dispute was resolved with little outright violence indicates that there is still hope for the future peace of Northern Ireland.

Husband v wife: crossing the battle lines
Article Abstract:
It can be argued that there are some ways in which women must become more like men if marriages are to be successful, according to marriage expert Professor John Gottman. Men are willing to avoid conflict in imperfect relationships, whereas women are more idealistic and tend to want to talk about a problem at great length. Women should be aware that it is sometimes better to withdraw temporarily from a conflict, rather than carry on arguing with no prospect of a resolution.

Is the ramblers' battle won?
Article Abstract:
The UK's new Labour government seems to be strongly in favour of the right of ramblers to roam over the countryside. At present, large areas of land in the UK are still unaccessible to ramblers, and the Country Landowners Association is opposed to allowing ramblers free access to all parts of the countryside. It is likely that any new legislation on this issue will be limited in scope, as the Labour party has a narrow definition of open country.
