Why the Bank of England was right on interest rates after all
Article Abstract:
It is now becoming clear that former UK Chancellor Kenneth Clarke was misguided in preventing the Bank of England from increasing interest rates in summer 1995. At the time, his judgement seemed to be correct, as economic growth appeared to be slowing down. However, it has now been established that the economy was growing more rapidly than had been thought. This has significant implications for future interest policy. If interest rates were not increased sufficiently in 1995, then it follows that interest rate rises will have to take place now.
